When the air begins to turn crisp and you can’t go anywhere without finding pumpkins and pumpkin-flavored treats, it’s time to make an important decision: What am I going to be for Halloween?

Sometimes the answer comes easily and sometimes it’s more difficult. But when you and your significant other are planning on dressing up together, things can get stressful. You want to look put together, but also like the most fun couple at the party, while giving off the vibe that you’ve been planning it for months, but also effortless. Those are some hard waters to navigate.

If you’re still searching for that perfect duo getup, consider some of our favorite suggestions for unique (and easy) costumes you can make at home, without spending tons of money.

Google Maps:

Do you feel like you and your significant other finally found each other after searching everywhere? Or do you feel like you couldn’t be more different? Either way, this costume can help say a lot about your relationship.

What you need:

red paint/markers

yellow duct tape

a printer

How to make it:

For the headpiece, cut out the cardboard into a shape that resembles a large ping pong paddle. Cut out holes for your faces and attach elastic to either side (to keep it on your head). You don’t have to use elastic - just use whatever you have to make it work! This isn’t a science.

Tape the yellow duct tape in a grid on your shirts to make the roads. Print off street names and icons (such as a bus for a bus stop, etc.) and tape them down onto the tape.

Don’t be surprised if someone asks for directions at some point.

Bank Robbers:

If you’d rather put in very little effort but still look cool, consider taking on the the lifestyle of a criminal (but just for the evening and without any actual criminal activity). This costume is easy to put together and has a very low risk of people asking, “What are you supposed to be?”

What you need:

black & white striped shirt

black beanies

black pants

black fingerless gloves

*BONUS: a stuffed laundry bag or something else that looks like it’s carrying stolen money! Try filling it with crumpled up newspaper or shopping bags so it isn’t too heavy but looks nice and plump.

If you’re a fan of the popular serial killer drama (with a hint of comedy), you’ll immediately recognize this as being one of the most clever couples costumes of all time. Any Dexter Morgan fans who see you will instantly be amazed and jealous they didn’t think of it first.

What you need:

  • green long sleeve shirt

  • black apron

  • Dexter Morgan Miami PD badge

  • syringe

  • red paint

  • white strapless dress

  • saran wrap

  • fake retractable knife

  • red paint

How to make it:

Dexter’s look is pretty straightforward. Put on the green shirt, apron and badge. Smear some red paint over your face, badge and apron. Carry around the syringe like you’re getting ready to take another victim.

For the victim, put on the dress and wrap yourself in the plastic wrap. Attach the retractable knife to the front and add the red paint around it. Don’t forget the paint a small red line on the cheek from where Dexter collected a drop of blood for his collection! (It’s all in the details.)
