During this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, Road & Travel Magazine named the winners of the prestigious “International Car of the Year” awards. The 2016 Kia Optima won the International Car of the Year award and the 2016 Kia Sorento won the International SUV of the Year award.

The panel of judges, or jurors, had high praise for both vehicles. On the Optima, they noted its aggressive design, a long list of available features, impressive powertrain options and an overall great value.

For the Sorento, the premium interior amenities, extensive safety features and all-wheel drive capacity helped win the vote.

These wins brought the Kia brand to a never-before-seen fourth consecutive win of the ICOTY brand award. For 2015, Kia’s K900 luxury sedan took home the honors; 2014 saw a win for the Kia Cadenza premium sedan; the previous-generation Optima stole the show in 2013.

Jurors for the competition are renowned auto journalists and experts from well-known and respected publications such as Consumer Guide Automotive, MSN Autos, New Car News Syndicate and Road & Travel Magazine.

COO and EVP of Kia Motors America, Michael Sprague, noted that the Optima and Sorento are two of the brand’s best-selling vehicles and have been instrumental in the transformation of the brand and its image. He also notes that two of the three winners of this year’s awards going to Kia is a great indicator that Kia continues to “offer a world-class balance of design, amenities, craftsmanship, safety and value for today’s savvy consumers.”

2015 is the 20th anniversary of Road & Travel Magazine’s “Of the Year” awards, which includes three categories: International Car, International SUV and International Family Vehicle of the Year.

The judging process takes into account things such as style, performance and comfort. But it also takes things a step further, noting how each brand connects emotionally with its consumer through marketing efforts.

Courtney Caldwell, editor-in-chief of Road & Travel Magazine, said that no other brand has ever won four years in a row.

“It goes to show just how exceptional the new Kia models are, providing clear direction of where the Kia brand is headed,” she said. “We are near speechless at the level of progress the Kia brand has made in spite of the stiff competition.  It is without a doubt the brand that gets the most ‘wows’ from our staff and is truly an industry success story that we can relate to in many ways.”
