With the season of thankfulness and giving still fresh on our minds and the sense of a fresh start right around the corner, now is the perfect time to think about ways to give back in the new year.

Maybe you were especially touched by an act of kindness this holiday season or one of your 2016 resolutions is to get involved with the community or support a charity. Maybe you haven’t thought about it at all, but you’re open to the idea.

We’ve done a little research and found a few local charities with high ratings on Charity Navigator’s website (so you can feel confident in your support and know you are contributing to a legitimate cause).

Read a little about these nonprofits here and then feel free to visit their websites to learn more and figure out how you can best get involved. Then, go out and make 2016 great!

This local organization is the nonprofit partner of the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). It was founded in 2002 when Twin Cities leaders were inspired to support public education and prepare students for success after high school. AchieveMpls serves as a bridge between MPS and the community of businesses, foundations, nonprofits, government agencies and individuals.

According to their website, AchieveMpls “provides personalized career and college planning resources, work readiness training, on-the-job experience and professional mentors to help students become career and college ready.”

How to get involved:

You can volunteer as a career coach and mentor or your business can become an employer for paid internships applied for by local Minneapolis-area teens in the Step-Up program. Another way to support is to donate funds or become a community partner.
